OVERVIEW
Most tower names and their call signs have special meaning. Some were named after the city or town in which they were located. Others received shortened names of towns. Town in Newcomerstown Ohio is an example. Wandle in Canton Ohio received its name from a short version of Wheeling AND Lake Erie, hence Wandle. Call letters is an interesting study in itself. Most are just one or two letters usually taken from the name. They usually, but not always, meant something. MY the call letters for Mt Jackson in Indianapolis IN stood for Main to Yard. After Avon yard opened in the 1960's the call sign went to the new interlocking and Mt Jackson tower was removed from service. DX also in Indianapolis meant Dearborn Xing (Crossing). WP,Mike tower in Ft. Wayne IN, stood for Wabash/PRR the two railroads that crossed at that point. I will not list every towers call signs meaning here;there are far too many but I will post that information under each towers profile page.
Texas towers under state law were given numbers. There was a very good discussion on this subject on Frank Garon's alltimeinterlockingtowerlist Yahoo group. I have added a link under my links page which is a rich source of information about Texas interlockings.
New Haven gave numbers to their towers proceeded by the letters SS which stood for signal station. For example Devon tower in Bridgeport CT. was SS#71. New York Central had a handful of towers that had SS numbers.
I would be interested in hearing from the viewers any additional information along these lines.
